This is another recipe that was invented for the mystery box challenge at Traditional Goan Foodies! I managed to use all 5 mystery ingredients in this recipe – green chilies, plantains, star anise, mushrooms and kokum. Mutlyo is a Goan snack which is made with parboiled rice covering and usually a sweet coconut jaggery filling which is steamed. It is served as a tea time snack. In this recipe I use plantain flour to make the covering and stuffed it with a mushroom filling. It is a perfect lunch box item!

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes
Servings: Makes around 8 mutlyo
How to make it:
- Heat oil in a vessel. Add the chopped green chilies, chopped kokum and star anise powder to hot oil.
- Next add the onion and let it begin to brown.
- Add the chopped mushrooms, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. I used shimeji mushrooms but you can use any mushrooms of your choice. Mix well and cook till the mushrooms ooze all the water.
- Once all the liquid evaporates add in the coconut.
- Mix well and cook for 2 minutes. Turn the flame off and let the filling cool.
- Before making the dough, place water for boiling to steam the mutlyo. An idli steamer is ideal.
- In a bowl, take plantain flour and rice flour. Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt and mix well. Add hot water little at a time and knead into a dough. Be careful as the water will be hot.
- Take a small amount of the flour in your hand, roll it into a ball and then press it flat in the center. The outer edges should be thicker then the inside.
- Make a pocket and place some of the filling in it.
- Close to form a ball.
- Place the balls in a greased plate in the steamer.
- Cover and steam for 15 minutes.
- Serve hot!
Wow, sounds delicious.
