Cafreal Kheema Pao

Cafreal is a green paste made with greens and spices which was introduced in Goa by the Portuguese. It has African culinary influences which were adopted by the Portuguese. In my previous post, I have posted the recipe for making Cafreal masala. Here is my twist on the famous Indian street food, kheema pao. Coming from a non vegetarian family, it was really difficult adjusting to a vegetarian lifestyle when I moved in to a hostel during my undergrad in Belgaum. I would patiently wait for weekends when I could request my friends to get kheema for me. Oh, how I relished every bite of it! Belgaum does have the best mutton! I love kheema pao and I love cafreal. I thought why not combine the two and see how it turns out! The results were delectable! It is almost like a Goan sloppy joe’s!

What you will need:

Cafreal Masala1 cup
Minced Meat450 kilograms
Oil3 tablespoons
Potatoes250 grams
Salt1/2 teaspoon
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 45 minutes
Servings: 6

How to make it:

  • Make the cafreal masala.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add in the diced potatoes. Add salt. Fry till the potatoes turn golden brown. Remove them and keep aside.
  • In the same pan, add in the minced meat and cafreal masala. You can use any minced meat of your choice. I used mutton.
  • Mix the masala and meat well, and cook till it is done.
  • Add in the fried potatoes and give it one last mix.
  • Serve stuffed in a bun or with bread to accompany it. Either way, it is delectable!
