It is very convenient to go to a department store and get some pita bread to make all your favorite pita bread recipes. But then you pick up that packet and see the list of ingredients that you do not recognize? Ever been to a middle eastern restaurant? I don’t know about you, but when they bring out the fresh, warm pita basket, it makes my day! You will never get that satisfaction from store brought bread. Pita is not at all difficult to make. Make it with whole wheat and it is healthy too! Here is a full-proof recipe that works for me every time. I will share some tips with it as well on how to make the perfect pita 🙂 Â
What you will need:
Ingredients | Quantity |
---|---|
Oil | 1 tablespoon |
Salt | 1 1/2 teaspoon |
Sugar | 2 teaspoons |
Warm Water | 2 cups |
Wheat Flour for Dusting | 1/4 cup |
Whole Wheat Flour | 4 cups |
Â
Total time: 2 hours
Servings: Makes around 12 pita breads Â
How to make it:
- In a stand mixer, add 4 cups of whole wheat flour, rapid rise yeast, salt, sugar, and mix them well.
- Add the warm water and knead it into a soft though. Tip: If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can mix the dough by hand as well 🙂
- Remove the dough from the bowl.
- To the same bowl, add the oil and spread it to the bottom of the vessel. Place the dough back in, cover, and let it proof in a warm place for 30 min to an hour or until it doubles in size.
- Once the dough has doubled, remove it out and cut it into 12 equal portions. Tip:Â You can make more or fewer portions based on the size of the pita bread you desire. These are for 6-inch pieces of bread.Â
- Heat the frying pan. Tip: Cast iron pans work the best for this recipe as they transfer heat evenly.Â
- Form a smooth ball of one of the portions of the dough. Sprinkle some flour on the rolling surface. Roll out the dough evenly into a circle, keeping it around 1/4th of an inch thick.
- Now here is the big tip that I find helps to make the bread puff so you get that beautiful pita pocket. Once you roll the bread out, leave it to proof for 5 minutes before you put it on the frying pan. Once you put the rolled dough on the pan, flip it every 15-20 seconds to ensure even cooking and you will see it puff up beautifully!
- Place it in a keep warm container until ready to eat.Â
- Enjoy with your favorite dip or as a pita pocket to hold your favorite fillings.
