Boiled Wontons

wontons

Wontons are perfect meat-filled dumplings that are not just delicious but healthy too. I love wontons as they are easy to make ahead of time and use as needed for a quick mid-week dinner. Boiled wontons are my favorite, though! The tangy and spicy dipping sauce takes them to a new level of deliciousness!

What you will need:

IngredientsQuantity
For the Wontons:
Wonton Wrappers25
Minced Meat250 grams
Chopped Spring Onions20 grams
Chopped Cilantro20 grams
Chopped Garlic3 large cloves
Salt1/3 teaspoon
Cumin Powder1/2 teaspoon
Chicken Stock/Broth4 cups
Ginger1 inch
Lemongrasss1 strand
Dark Soy Sauce1 tablespoon
For the Dipping Sauce:
Cilantro5 strands
Lemongrass1 strand
Ginger1 inch
Green Chilies2 long
Vinegar1/4 cup
Salt1/2 teaspoon
Sugar1 1/2 tablespoon

Prep time: 30 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Servings: Makes around 25 wontons

How to make it:

  • First, make the filling. In a mixing bowl, add minced meat of your choice, chopped cilantro, garlic, and spring onions. Add the salt and soy sauce, along with the cumin powder. Mix everything well.
  • Take about a 1/3 teaspoon filling and place it in the middle of the wonton. Shape as you desire. I made a triangle and then joined the two ends.
  • Pound the ginger and lemongrass to bring out the aromatics. Heat the broth or stock with ginger and lemongrass. Once the broth comes to a boil, remove the ginger and lemongrass out.
  • Add a few wontons at a time and let them come to a boil. You know that they are done when they start floating on the top. It should not take more than 5 minutes per batch. Ensure not to crowd the stockpot. Tip: Do not discard the stock. Use it for making soups.
  • While the wontons are cooking, make the dipping sauce. In a mortar and pestle, add the ginger, chilies, cilantro, lemongrass, salt, and sugar. Crush into a paste, as fine as possible. Add vinegar and mix well. I used red wine vinegar but you can use any vinegar of your choice.
  • Serve the wontons hot with the side of the dipping sauce!
  • Tip: You can make the wontons ahead of time and freeze them immediately. You can use them as needed for a quick meal.
